Harassment and Bullying on Social Media What is the history of this topic? Since the beginning of time people have always had an instinct for the desire to survive. Through this instinct of survival comes competition, where people feel the need to surpass others to get what they want, which has not changed as humans have evolved (Donegan, 2012, p.34). The aspect of competition occurs in many aspects of our life including in our education, social and economic systems. In the U.S., capitalistic society, we live in it pushes the idea that to be considered successful, people need to obtain wealth. This idea has caused bullying to be unintentionally installed as a survival necessity for many at a young age (Donegan, 2012, p.34). Bullying can be defined as the intentional harm-doing or harassment that is directed toward vulnerable targets and typically repeated (Bullying, 2016). This type of behavior can range from physical abuse as well as, verbal abuse not just person to person, but from other forms of communication such as the internet (Bullying,2016). The fir st systematic study of bullying began in the early 1980’s in Norway and Sweden led by research professor of psychology Dan Olweus (Piotrowski, 2009, p. 324). In this study, Olweus found that of the 15,000 children and youth he surveyed 15 percent of the respondents had experienced bullying 9 percent as victims, 7 percent as bullies, and 2 percent as both bully and victim (Piotrowski, 2009, p.324).
