Hamlet, By William Shakespeare - 961 Words
In William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Hamlet the ghost is in the imagination of Hamlet and is nonexistent. For example, the sane queen did not see the ââ¬Å"ghostâ⬠that Hamlet was referring to. The Queen asks Hamlet, ââ¬Å"To whom do you speak this?â⬠(III.iv.143). Hamlet, who has been acting mad and delusional throughout the play, thinks he is talking to the ââ¬Å"ghostâ⬠of his father. The rational and mother is saddened that her son has gone mad and is seeing things. Although Hamlet does say he plans to act crazy, there is somewhat of a blur between whether Hamlet is acting crazy, or whether his madness has gotten to him at this point. Some individuals may point out that the three other guards, Marcellus, Bernardo, and Horatio, saw the ghost too. However, theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the Oedipus complex as: ââ¬Å"A sexual desire that a child feels toward the parent of the opposite sex along with jealous feelings toward th e parent of the same sex.â⬠Although Hamlet and Queen Gertrude show affections for each other, it the common love shared between mother and son. However, as the novel progresses, Hamlet becomes mad with his mother for marrying King Claudius so quick and betraying Hamletââ¬â¢s real father: ââ¬Å"Hamlet: You are the Queen, your husbandââ¬â¢s brotherââ¬â¢s wife, / And-would it were not so-you are my motherâ⬠(III.iv.17-18). In this excerpt Hamlet tells his mother he wishes she was not his mother, and Hamlet shows resentment and is upset with his mother for betraying his father. In an Oedipus complex, the son shows attraction to his mother, and resentment towards his father for being a block toward oneââ¬â¢s mother. However, all throughout the play, Hamlet yearns for his father and is upset that Claudius killed him. Hamlet even want to return revenge upon Claudius for harming his father. This would not coincide with the Oedipus Rex complex because Hamlet loved his father, rather than despising and going against him. ââ¬Å"A bloody deed? Almost as bad, good mother, / As kill a king and marry with his brotherâ⬠(III.iv.29-30). Opheliaââ¬â¢s death was an accident. She suffered a plethora of trauma from her fatherââ¬â¢s death, leading to the cause of her insanity.While in the
